English Practice Teams

English Practice Teams are meant to encourage a habit of expanding weekly English Practice. I believe Homework and Lecture is not enough to truly master Oral English!

This is entirely for fun, so you will not get a grade or any class credit for doing this - the two teams from my 9 classes, who have the most points each week, will win a free dinner when we are back on campus.

HERE IS THE LINK TO THE SCORE SHEET: https://docs.qq.com/sheet/DR01ramJmQ2dNeGNk?tab=q11b86&c=A2A0B0

Directions for the Competition:

1. Create a team of 3-5 students. Choose a name for your team, and a symbol/sigil.

2. Use this link to register your team, and record points for your team: https://docs.qq.com/sheet/DR01ramJmQ2dNeGNk?tab=q11b86&c=A2A0B0

3. You are responsible for recording most the points for yourself and your team - except for the last three categories (extra points given by teacher, total per student and total per team). I will record points in those last three categories.

4. Do not lie about which activities you have done - most of them are optional anyhow, and there is no grade for this, so no point in lying.

5. You must finish recording your points before Sunday night. I will announce winners every Sunday after 7 pm.

Tasks for the Competition:

1. (required) Attended Lecture

2. (required) Did last week's Homework

3. (required) Did 5 days of practice, for 15 minutes at least each day, on the NCE app 省心英语

4. (optional) Did some kind of listening activity in English for at least 15 minutes (movie, podcast, audio book, video, tv show, radio, news)

5. (optional) Did an English Zoom discussion with your Team for at least 15 minutes:

  • NOTE, this means I want you create Zoom Chats with your team outside of class. This is with your team, not lecture groups.

6. (optional) Practiced on one of these dubbing/speaking app for at least 15: (a) 老友记, (b) 流利说 or (c) 英语趣配音

7. (optional) Did some kind of reading activity in English for at least 15 minutes (book, article, research paper, comic, newspaper)

8. (bonus optional) Completed the Bonus assignment assigned by the teacher (there will be a different one each week)

9. (optional) Vocabulary practice for at least 15 minutes

  • NOTE: this means, throughout the week, make a list of new vocabulary that you learn from class or anywhere else. Practice speaking and memorizing this list once a week for at least 15 minutes to get this credit.

10. (optional) Other/Extra points (these points will be given by me, the teacher at the end of the week, on Sunday)

  • NOTE: I will also calculate the total for each student, and the total for each team.

Points:

  • 3 points each for: Completing the required assignments
  • 2 points for: Completing the bonus optional assignment
  • 1 point each for: Doing the optional assignments 1 time a week, for at least 15 minutes
    • If you do any optional activity 2-4 days a week, reward yourself with 2 points for this activity.
    • If you do any optional activity 5-7 days a week, reward yourself with 3 points for this activity.

How the teacher will score the teams:
  • Because some teams are small (3 people) and some teams are big (7 people), to make the competition fair, I will record total points based on AVERAGE SCORE PER TEAM.
  • For Example: Imagine we have a team of 3 people: Bob, Billy and Susan.
    • Susan Earned 10 points this week
    • Bob Earned 8 points this week
    • Billy Earned 12 points this week
    • The team score will be: Total points earned/Number of teammates.
      • (10 + 8 + 12)/3 = 30/3 = 10
    • So the team score for this example will be 10 points!
